ORIGINS OF COLOR: SECRETS OF THE OLD MASTERS
Where did the colors used by the old masters originate? How did they achieve the luscious and luminous colors we see in their paintings? George O'Hanlon has traveled the world in search of unique sources of pigment. As founder of Natural Pigments, an artists' materials company, he brings his expertise to focus on the origins of pigments used by medieval and Renaissance artists as well as their revival by contemporary artists. He will discuss the physical and visual characteristics of many common and exotic pigments and show how these masters used them to create their masterpieces. The lecture will be accompanied by digital image projection. This lecture was first presented in 2006 at the National Gallery in Washington, DC. The presentation will be followed by questions and answers and is designed for painters of all mediums and anyone interested in pigments.
Digital Image Presentation: One hour lecture

MAKING IT LAST: BUILDING PAINTINGS FROM THE GROUND UP
All about constructing a painting from the support to the ground and final layers, including discussing how the "fat-over-lean" rule in oil painting is inherently flawed. Practical procedures are described to build your oil paintings according to the studies on the conservation of paintings. The presentation will be followed by questions and answers. This presentation is designed for painters of all mediums, but has special application to oil painting.
Digital Image Presentation: One hour lecture

ABOUT THE PRESENTER
George O'Hanlon is technical director of Natural Pigments and executive director of Iconofile, a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to promoting understanding of sacred art. George worked as art director and then creative director for advertising agencies in Silicon Valley, California, working on such major accounts as Sony, Hewlett-Packard and Ricoh. He then established a database marketing communications firm that was later acquired by the international chemical company, Shin-Etsu, where he was retained as president of marketing operations for the U.S. In 1992, he left this post to study traditional art techniques and in 2001, founded Natural Pigments and Iconofile to promote an understanding of these techniques among contemporary artists.

ABOUT NATURAL PIGMENTS
Natural Pigments supplies artists' materials used in historical painting from pre-historic times up to and including the middle of the 19th century before the commercialization of artists' paint. Their mission is to stock the largest supply of natural pigments, paints and other professional art supplies, enabling Natural Pigments to provide a selection that makes shopping for rare and hard-to-find art materials easy. Natural Pigments' objective is to promote the understanding and use of these materials among artists by providing detailed information for their use in encaustic, fresco, oil, watercolor and tempera painting.

VERANO GIGANTE!
ART AND MUSIC FOR THE SUMMER LOVE :: ROUND 3
This event is Sunday at our Atwater Studio
Sunday August 29th 8pm - 12pm

This month we are gonna have more live screenprinting, so bring your old shirts, worn skirts, leather jackets, or whatever else you want printed on!

There is nothing better than kicking it on a warm Summer night with friends, music, art and a good atmosphere. Our first two parties of the summer have been great fun and we are excited for round 3. Last time we were supposed to end at 10pm, but all the people dancing weren't having it. We finally had to cut the music after midninght, and send the folks on their way. Because everyone had such a good time we have decided to make this month's Verano Gigante! a later affair, starting at 8pm and going until midnight. Music isn't the only reason to come hang out. We will also be bringing out the screens again and yes, back by popular demand... slushies all night.
Don't be shy, get some friends together and come hang out.

The DJ sets up at 8pm, come early if you're hungry, stay late for fun with good people. All art work displayed is created our customers.

Corita Kent Mash Up
Saturday July 24th 12-5pm

Use the POP prints of Corita Kent artist, activist, teacher, nun! This Saturday you have the rare opportunity to make your own prints from the original art of Corita Kent.

In the late 1960s, Corita was the covergirl (literally, on Newsweek Magazine) of the "changing nun." For the first time ever, we're taking elements of the provocative and profound POP art by this "rebel with a paintbrush" and recombining them in our own way. Posters, Tee Shirts, Tote Bags, Stretched Canvas all yours to experiment with Corita's bold graphics, intense colors and pithy phrases. Items to screen priced from $10 - $50. All proceeds go to the Corita Art Foundation.

Sponsored in conjunction with Fresh Pressed Silkscreen, Gelato Bar, and Primrose Organics Hair Salon, this will be an afternoon of artmaking with a live DJ and special surprises. This event is part of the 40th anniversary celebration of the Immaculate Heart Community Corita's former order of nuns who claimed their independence from the Catholic Church in 1970 and continue to live by their consciences today with charitable programs for the elderly, underserved minority youth, women and girls in transition, affordable housing, healthcare and education. Visit www.corita.org or www.immaculateheartcommunity.org for more information.

PAINTINGS BY JENNIFER JELENSKI
On Display Through December

Reception
Friday December 5th
6:00 - 8:00 pm

We are very pleased to once again have the paintings of Jennifer Jelenski on display at the store. Jennifer is an artist whose work seems to live in multiple worlds at once. On the one hand her content laden imagery and belaboured processes speak to an older, more traditional approach to painting. On the other, her palette, medium, and a style that would lend itself to mass production, brings the work squarely into the present. It is this juxtaposition, both in concept and execution, that is one of the work's greatest strengths.

Please join us to celebrate this local artist.
For more information on Jennifer and her work visit Sacred Skull or La Luz De Jesus

END OF SUMMER PARTY
Celebrating over 5 years in business!
Saturday September 13th
8:30pm - ???

We're throwing a party to say THANK YOU LOS ANGELES! We've been in business over five years now, proving all the naysayers wrong, showing that independent business can not only survive in LA, but thrive. The truth is it wouldn't be possible if it weren't for you; one of the strongest artist communities in the world.
Art is alive in LA, and we're just happy to be here to share it with you!

Now, some of you may have gotten used to our annual BBQs, but don't worry this year's celebration is sure to satisfy.
We're teaming up with Purple Circle (our neighborhood salon) to throw an end of summer bash. It's going to be a great time, so feel free to come down Saturday night and have some fun with us! There'll be plenty of friendly faces, good beer, and great music.
Can't wait to see you there.

ART FOR LIFE: A benefit for Save The Children
Thank you all for making this event a success!

A bunch of you braved the cold to come out for some good beer and great art and music. Thank you so much; because of your participation we were able to raise over $4,000 for our chosen charity.
We are already looking forward to our next event this summer commemorating Blue Rooster's 5 year anniversary. Hot summer fun! More info will be posted as we get closer to the warmer weather.

Saturday December 8th 1pm - Midnight
2000 N. Figueroa LA, CA 90026
100% of the proceeds from this event will be donated!

Blue Rooster Art, in association with Landmark Inc, are very proud to present this event: Art for Life. $5 at the door will get you access to live painting, live music, a silent art auction (where there are sure to be some steals!), free give aways, and generally a good time. And the best part of it is that every penny of your money will go to children in need! This event is a collective celebration of art and life. But, sorry kids, 21 and over only.

So whats going on?
First off we are going to be opening the doors at 1pm for anyone interested in joining us in creating a mural. The 50'+ wall we will be building will be open to everyone who wants to participate. The goal is to have fun and see what happens when a bunch of random artists come together to make one (big) cohesive thing. So, bring some paint and come get down. We will have some supplies for all to use if you feel like painting (or drawing, or whatever) but dont feel like lugging your stuff.
Once the sun goes down, then the party starts. Beer, wine and BBQ all day, bands at sundown. DJ all night. Need we say more? Having fun for a good cause.
On top of it all, a number of artists have been kind enough to donate art to be auctioned off. There are sure to be some steals for any collectors out there.
